Farmer Smith looked out over his freshly cultivated field and said “You know, life is a whole lot simpler when you plow around a stump.”
Having grown up in the city, I was amazed at the many truisms that seemed to be a part of farm life. I was in the mood to glean more of these agricultural nuggets so I opened the door; “Do tell me more about what you see as you look out on the field that you just worked.”
After a moment of thinking he began to share:
“Life is much like a barren field at first; a blank canvas on which you paint the message of your life. Seeds of both success and failure are present in all of us and the things that ultimately grow are in large measure up to you to manage.
As a farmer, I look at the soil that the seeds fall into and how the seeds are then cultivated. The soil is pretty much neutral in the process; it will develop as best it can whatever you plant. Fertile soil will work to grow both weeds and roses just the same; it doesn’t care. The key is to be aware of the seeds that you are planting because that is what will grow in your life.
So if fertile soil will grow anything, how then do you know if you are planting the right seeds?
Well, you could say that time will tell in that by their fruits all seeds show what they bring to the table. That works for some seeds; corn for example grows so fast that you can almost watch it grow. Most things in life aren’t like that; the fruits of your actions often take years to develop while life at the same time is very short. You don’t want to find out in old age that you planted the wrong seeds. The key is to live your life right the first time so that when you look back over it when you are old, you will enjoy watching it a second time.
Still you wonder how to life your life. You can of course structure you life around the basic principles of the world following its well worn maxims like first of all, do no harm, and so on. These maxims will put you generally on safe ground but you will never know if they will bring the best out of you specifically.
As I see ti, we all come here for a specific purpose and have been planted here to accomplish specific things. Just like there are unique possibilities in every seed that is planted, so also has The Creator put a unique calling within you, one that you are responsible for cultivating. Nourishing that gift will fill your life with a divine sense of purpose that will lead you to benefit and enrich everyone that you meet.”
Blessings on your journey.
