With a sigh Mr. Athena spoke:
“Originally faith was to be a thing of beauty. All artists like to sign their work and God is no different. Creation is a master portrait from the creator with signatures placed everywhere. Like a divine Easter Egg Hunt, elements of the divine nature were tucked into every corner of His handiwork So much so that it was written long ago”
O lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word I on my tongue you know it completely, o lord.
You hem me in, behind and before; you have laid you hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in theyou are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there you hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
“What a magnificent display of God's presence! The beauty of God was to be seen in flowers, the splendor of God was to be seen in the wide expanses of the universe, the creativity of God was to be seen in His making everyone unique; in short, everything everywhere was to sing to the Glory of God. What a glorious plan! No matter where you go, you are in the grand cathedral of a living and personal God, the blue sky is the canopy of the cathedral, the green grass its carpet, the birds of the air its choir. The gentle rippling of the brook was to be His voice of comfort, the scent of the rose His ability to tuck beauty into every corner of His handiwork.
“The beauty was there for everyone to see and enjoy but it got tarnished. Somewhere along the line thinkers began to believe that they could somehow circumscribe the almighty with their thoughts. Their paltry attempts to do so always fell embarrassingly short of their mark because they didn't understand the true purpose of religious thought. You cannot contain God in your theology; if you could you would then be God. Your humanity limits your understanding of God just like a bird's perspective makes it impossible for that bird to understand the reality of holding a job and paying taxes. The only purpose that theology can serve is to lead you to worship and adoration. Instead, certain religious viewpoints became the dividing lines separating one group from another, one manner of worship from another and so on.”
“Wait a minute buster” blurted out Eutychus. “So are you suggesting that nobody got it right? That all of the thinkers before me whose pay grade is far higher than mine didn't get it right? I find that hard to believe.”
“No, just the opposite” replied the Teacher.
“You are playing games and I must admit that I am getting a bit frustrated here. How do you get to talk out of both sides of your mouth?”
“Let me tell you a little story that might clear this up” said the Teacher with a wry smile.
“Five blind men were given the assignment of describing justan elephant is like. They were all placed at different positions around the elephant and each of them responded from the perspective of their unique location. The one man at the side of the elephant said “The elephant is like a great wall.” The one man at the trunk declared “No, you don't quite get it. The elephant is like a giant cobra.” The one at the legs said, “You are blind. The elephant is like a great tree!” Frustrated by all of this, the one at the tusk said “Wait a minute, elephant is like a spear!” Shouting to get everyone's attention, the one at the tail shouted “Wait a minute gentlemen, the elephant is like a snake and a stinky one at that!”
“The truth is that they were all right and they were all wrong; limited by their own perspectives, accurate though they may have been. What you have to remember is that even our grandest of theologians, standing on the pinnacle of human intelligence can only at best catch an obscure glimpse of God in His grandeur. The reason for this is clear; God is infinite, we are finite. Our greatest of thinkers can only think a thought that God already knows; our thoughts are known by God before we were even created. This having been said, theologians began the process of attempting to wrap human reason around an infinite God without clearly stating the deficiencies of any attempt. If your theology leads you to worship a flawless God then it has done it's job; on the other hand if your theology leads you to believe that you somehow now have a patent on God himself then your theology is hopelessly flawed.”
“Now you are ready to start piecing some things together. Let me share with you the story of a couple of great thinkers and their perspective that formed their opinions.”
