“Religion properly defined is in fact a living thing that is to connect you with a living God,” Shared the Teacher.
“That being the case, idolizing the thinkers of the past is more about intellectual laziness rather than respect. To pay true homage to them; think as they did interpreting fresh perspectives as God reveals new insights into who he is. Remember however that your religious quest is not solely an intellectual matter. It is impossible to circumscribe God with human intellect; if all of the wisdom of this world's greatest thinkers were all collected it would be like a thimble full of knowledge of the ocean of God's wisdom. Your quest then is in part what you believe but also what you feel deeply inside.
“I guess you can see where all of this is heading; God has placed you here in this point in time with the life experiences that you have had to date so that you can come to understand it all from your perspective as only you can. That is the challenge of religion: to understand and accept the contributions of those who have come before you while accepting it all from your own perspective.
“The truth of the matter is that the possibilities of your spiritual journey are as rich as your personal journey. View the bible from the perspective of your own life and come to see the message that only you were created to see. Placed another way; the bible is like an artist's palate with all of the colors of the spectrum available to you as an artist. Red, orange, yellow, blue and green all adorn this palate and there are also the colors that Calvin put there for you as well. Why use only one color when the entire spectrum is yours to paint your own faith story?”
“You are wondering what your next step is, aren't you?” asked Paul.
“Your steps in faith must begin with who you are so begin with an open and honest review of your life because that is the foundation on which your faith will begin. You will probably sense a need for forgiveness which is given as freely as the rain that falls, and beyond that, you will begin to construct a faith that is uniquely yours. Remember to stand on the shoulders of those who came before you but add to it the richness that only your life journey can add.
Eutychus found himself empowered and still wanting to learn more. “Paul, just how do I begin?”
Paul looked at me and said “You are asking me how to view the lessons of your life from which you and you alone can view God? Even if I could answer that I wouldn't because that would rob you of the thrill of the journey. Actually, this is where I leave you to your own life of prayer and reflection. Enjoy the journey and thanks for the coffee.
